GRIEVING A PET

THEY WERE NEVER “JUST A PET.”

They were the paws coming down the hallway, the face waiting at the door, the warm body curled beside you at night, the reason you took the walk, the keeper of routines, and sometimes the one constant presence through some of the hardest seasons of your life.

Losing a beloved animal can bring profound grief, yet pet loss is still too often minimized by people who don’t understand the relationship you shared. You may grieve the silence in the house, the empty bed in the corner, the leash still hanging by the door, or the instinct to reach for the food bowl before remembering you don’t need to fill it anymore. You may also carry guilt over difficult medical decisions, wondering whether you waited too long, acted too soon, missed a sign, or somehow could have done more.

The truth is, when we lose an animal we love, we aren’t grieving “just a pet.”

We are grieving family.

And that grief deserves compassion, time, and a place to go.
